  CHAPTER 1

This ‘whole storm in and take the kingdom of Vampires thing’ wasn’t working out so well for me.

My eyeballs were popping from their usual homes in my skull as the room got dark. Well, darker than it already was seeing as I was in an underground dungeon. Which would explain why the amount of blood and rot in this place was burning my eyes and had begun to sting my nasal passages.

Burning eyeballs were the least of my issues.

“Fuck you,” I ground out as best I could considering I was still not fully functioning. The words didn’t come out as loudly as I wanted, or as terrifying. It would have been hard to do either considering the Vampire King still had his fucking hand wrapped around my throat in a strangle that would rival a boa constrictor.

“Oh, I’ll consider it. Don’t be in such a rush, little one.” With one jerk of his arm, he tossed me to the side. My body flopped to the ground like I was made of oxygen deprived rags. I grunted as my body landed against the cold, hard marble floor. Marble coated with blood, as more cold drops of what I could only assume was blood dripped over me. My eyes drifted to the ceiling. Fuck me, it was blood dripping from the ceiling. Several bodies were pinned there, Biology frog style.

  Sick.

“Now that you have come to your senses and sacrificed yourself, what shall we do with you?”

Several of the henchmen under Hector’s control sucked in a breath as though they were children just surprised with new bikes. Hector immediately turned his dark gaze on them.

“My, my, I misspoke. What shall I do with her? Remember your place.”

The guards looked noticeably disappointed as they stared at the ground. One of them turned even more pale. Tingles pricked through my body as the heaviness of my predicament overtook me.

Damn, I’d really done it this time.

So much for my great plan.

I tried to cross my legs as though that could stop his promise of future fucking but forgot my limbs were still lifeless and numb from the serum I’d been given by asshole numbers one and two as I foolishly walked into the kingdom of the undead. Undead? Redead? Almost dead?

As much as I hated to admit it, my mates were right.

I should hot have come here.

“I’m conflicted, if I’m honest.” Hector tapped his chin with his pointer finger and began to pace back and forth.

A thin and frail girl shuffled closer, a small notebook and pencil in her hand. I didn’t know what she thought she was going to do with those blood-saturated school supplies but whatever it was she was doing out of fear alone. Her eyes were dark and trained on nothing but Hector. It was like she was his secretary-like creature.

He didn’t even seem to notice her, he was still staring at me, licking his lips.

“You are quite delicious, aren’t you?” He asked the question like it was a sex-maon. Gods, did he really expect me to answer that? “That is the crux. Oh, I’ve had plans for you since I was made aware of your existence and now, I find myself overwhelmed.”

My insides pulsed as he began to bounce on his toes, clapping and laughing like a madman. He threw his head back as he cackled the motion displaying his gleaming fangs and blood-stained neck. Not his own blood, of course, the blood of countless others.

I didn’t know if I should be creeped out or disgusted. My stomach twisted in a healthy combination of the two.

“How insane. Me, being conflicted. This hasn’t happened in many years.”

Hector was getting a real kick out of his many plans for me and which one to choose first. At this point, I wanted him to just pick a fate for me and begin to get it the fuck over with. It’s not like I could do anything to fight him, no matter how much I wanted to kick him in the balls.

“Your mother was incredible,” he licked his lips again. Yeah, I really wanted to kick him in the balls. “But I had no idea, you would be a magnificence greater than hers. She was my precious jewel. I would have treasured her always. But then she had to run away… and met that canine father of yours.” A growling sound hissed from his chest and I flinched. Well, I would have if I could move.

“She was mine!” He roared, rounding on me before he went back to pacing. “She belonged to me and worshiped the ground I walked on. There was no separating us.” He stopped pacing for a moment, his expression fading from rage to something closer to… constipated? That couldn’t be right. Either way, he was in pain. Good. He deserved some pain.

“Maybe she did love me after all. Maybe she knew that her temporary betrayal would gift me you.” His gaze targeted me. My chest felt like arrows had penetrated my sternum.

“Oh, the possibilities. You have so much power under that skin of yours. So much, just waiting for me. More power and a greater life for vampires lies right there in your beating pulse--in your lifeblood. I can scent you from here, that richness. Oh, it makes my mouth water and my throat parched.”

He swallowed audibly and I nearly gagged.

“I can’t stand it any longer…” Before I could take another breath, his body was on top of me. Despite his lithe frame, he was heavy, so heavy that I felt like I couldn’t breathe, that everything inside me was pressed down so much I was surprised I hadn’t gone flat. His teeth delved deep into my throat, hitting bone and causing my body to seize up in complete agony. This wasn’t like the bite of my mates at all. It was painful and as he began to drink from me, the pain reached my toes and burned through my cells. My eyes rolled back in my head as he took my lifeforce from me, more and more by the second. It was as if the more he took, the hungrier he became for more. His hands dug into my skin, bruising it. He twisted my skin in his grasp as he pulled me closer and closer until I was sure that not even air could penetrate the space between us.

My breaths became labored, so shallow I was confused as to whether or not they were actually coming out. Or if I was breathing at all.

Darkness took over my vision but I knew that someone was moving me. I could hear Hector talking about being full and satisfied for the moment.

I went in and out of consciousness as I was shoved this way and that until my skin felt a new coldness, a new musty smell.

As I came to, I realize I was back in control of my body but seconds too late. The cell door was closed, metal clanking again
st metal. I got up on shaky feet and tried to run to stop them but there was no use. I screamed at them, at the guards, at anyone who could hear me until my throat was again raw and chafed.

“It’s no use,” a whisper of a voice said from the corner of darkness across from me. “Trust me, it’s better to save your energy.”

I didn’t know who had spoken, but it didn’t matter. I knew she was right.

Not that I was going to listen.

  CHAPTER 2

“Why in the fuck should I listen to you? I don’t see you trying.” I grabbed two bars and shook the fuck out of them, trying anything and everything to break out of this dark and dingy cell. My sight was still blurry and my legs wonky and weak but neither stopped me from trying.

At least I was moving. Damn vampire king and his paralyzing serum!

“That’s because I’ve been here long enough that I know there’s no way out,” the girl snapped over my continued attempts at escape. “After a while, I got smart.”

I huffed out a humorless laugh as I moved to what looked like a weaker part of the hinges and kicked at them to test their strength.

Yeah, it wasn’t weaker at all.

Fuck these vampires and their fucking underground prisons!

“Yeah, you’re real fucking smart to get stuck down here in a vamp’s cell. You should get yourself tested.”

  “Tested?” I asked stupidly.

The girl in the corner was still out of sight but her voice and her laugh resounded through this hollow place, the only thing louder than the drip of some liquid in the distance. Gods, I hoped that sound was water and not blood.

“Yes, stupid girl. Tested to see just how dumb you are. You should save your energy for when the guards or Hector comes back.”

  That froze me.

“He comes down here?” I asked, turning, still thinking about ways out of here but sliding down the wall to take a rest. My head was still spinning and I could feel my recovering heartbeat in my throat.

Not only had I just gotten use of my body back, but I had lost a serious amount of blood. Maybe fighting against bars wasn’t my smartest move. I sat against the wall, staring into the cell beside me and the faded shape of the girl who was hiding in the shadows.

“Why does he come down here? To feed?”

She snickered and moved more into the light, only showing me part of her face. She was a thin thing with a heart-shaped face and messy hair.

I shuddered in place. “Well, he’s not going to have his way with me. No fucking way. My mates would slit his throat.”

I was determined. I was well aware I was a fool. But I was determined.

She moved closer. The scents coming off her made me realize this girl had been here for an eternity. I also realized she was a wolf like me. Clearly, Hector had a thing for shifters.

“You have a mate?” she asked, her eyes bright with actual interest. “And they let you come here on your own? What kind of mate lets their female just walk into the Vampire Kingdom and get caught?”

  “Not one,” I corrected. “Three.”

“What are you? Some kind of multi-pussied freak?”

I was sure she didn't mean to piss me off but she did. Mostly at myself since my mates, did, in fact, try to stop me but I was more stubborn than a mule. That and none of us were as freaky as the king of the blood suckers up there. Still, I needed info from her. “Yes. I have two cunts,” I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. “What do you know about it? I don’t see your mate around here.”

“None for me. My pack chooses mates for us. I had just made it to eighteen when the vamps took me from my pack. Well, actually he took all the females from the pack and slaughtered the rest. Even if I wanted a mate there aren’t any males left.”

My stomach flipped and rage coated my tongue. If I had any strength I would have started pounding my fists against the bars again.

This Hector fucker was a puzzle to me. He clearly didn’t like shifters since he was constantly putting hits on them but at the same time liked to keep shifter females down here to get his rocks off. The sickness of the Vampire King ran deep.

“He makes a habit of killing of packs, huh?”

One of her wheat-colored eyebrows cocked up.

“Yeah, you could say that. He should just…” She paused and reached out and grabbed my arm, putting one of her dingy fingers over my mouth and widening her eyes.

  “What are you–”

“Shhh!” She cut me off with a hiss just as the clip-clop of footsteps began to resound closer and closer.

She kept her hand clamped on my arm until the guard had passed. He looked into the cell briefly but mostly whistled to himself and kept walking. At the end of the hallway he made a U-turn and came back. Finally, when the steps became a whisper, she let go. “They will tell Hector if we are talking. We have to keep watch.”

I nodded and turned to wipe my face. “What were you saying about Hector and taking out packs?”

“It’s his thing. It’s like one of those real life conqueror games. He uses those assassin vamps to go in, infiltrate and before the pack knows it, he’s gotten what he wants and killed them before they could protest. He’s got like centuries-old beef with shifters. Some wolf stole his woman a long time ago or some shit.”

My stomach tightened. I think I had an idea who that woman-stealing wolf was. Although it wasn’t centuries ago… more like twenty years.

That wasn’t the only thing she said that struck a chord.

“Assassin Vamps?” I asked, scooting closer despite the smell. I knew of three assassin vamps but kept the information close to my chest.

“Yeah, I forgot their names. There’s three of them. They ride on motorcycles on do all sorts of murdering. Reginald is one. Looks like a fucking Greek god statue. I remember when he came into my pack talking shit about making peace and Hector only coming to claim what was rightfully his. They killed my father in front of me with no remorse whatsoever. Even killed the babies in the pack. Those three are straight from the pit of hell if you ask me.”

I swallowed against the boulder in my throat. I hadn’t expected that… She was talking about my mates but for the life of me, I couldn’t imagine Reggie killing anyone that didn’t come after him first. Yeah, I knew they were assassins but there was a reason they took those people out… right?

  Right?

Resurrected Gods I was going to be sick!

“So he kept you?” I asked, referring to Hector.

She shrugged one shoulder but slunk back into the shadows as the guard passed again. We waited for him to walk away and she pulled me in with her. I didn’t think it was possible, but the place was colder than my own cell. Probably thanks to the fact that we were completely surrounded by damp, grimy walls. At least they couldn’t heard us, even if my bones were freezing in place.

“Hector said he liked my blood. Tastes like lavender or some shit. I don’t know. Most days I wish he had slaughtered me with the rest.”

“I hope he doesn’t come down here for me. I’ll kick his balls so far up his throat that his fangs will pierce them.” I would, too, especially now that I could move my legs.

She let out a long, hard laugh. “I would pay to see that.”

I’d tried my damndest to soak in everything this girl was saying until I couldn’t anymore. “I’m so fucking sleepy,” I drolled, not even recognizing my own voice.

“Yeah, it’s the blood loss. Go ahead. Rest. I’ll flick you in the forehead if someone comes down.”

I laughed but somehow knew she would. “You do that.”

As I was sucked into nothingness I heard her whisper, “By the way, the name is Sammy.”

  CHAPTER 3

“Get up now!” A pinch on the top of my arm had me up and in defensive mode in seconds. Or, I tried to be in defensive mode. My arms went up, my fists flailed… and I promptly punched myself in the eye.

“Holy fucking teabags!” I shook my head, trying to focus while the adrenaline pum
ped inside me making my heart drum at a ridiculous speed.

“What’s happening?” I asked after a minute and I remembered what the hell had happened to me and that I was in this place, in this dungeon, this punishment for trying to save my mates and my pack.

“Shut up!” she hissed, pushing me back down to the floor.

What was it? Wake up? Go to sleep? I wish she would make up her mind. It didn’t take me long to figure out why she hadn’t.

“Open the doors!” Hector’s voice woke me up better than my punch to the face had. Fear iced my veins and I backed up toward the wall, needing at least some semblance of security. If I was against the way, I had one less side I had to watch.

The guard’s hand shook as he unlocked the cell under Hector’s shadow. He finally got it open and the Vampire King pushed him aside, with more than a few names muttered under his breath. But all the while his dark, unrelenting stare was on me. Hector snapped his fingers and Sammy, at least that’s what I think she had said as I had fallen asleep, was practically dragged out by her hair. She screamed all the way down the hall.

“Nothing happened!” he roared as he grabbed me by the throat, lifting me until my feet dangled. I slapped my hands over his trying to break free while also trying, you know, not to die.

“What?” I croaked out the best I could. This guy was the best at wanting to have conversations with someone he was simultaneously choking. It was like he didn’t understand biology or something. If you choke me, I can’t talk, motherfucker.
